Who is Michael R. McDougall? I'll tell you who he is. He is the man with the idea for a sequel. The film Apocalypto to me showed Mel Gibson's true genius. I love the way he researches his films historically. The reason for the Apocalypto sequel is because only a small portion of the population knows the history of the beginning of the Conquistadors, which ended Apocalypto with the Spaniards coming ashore. Thank you. If you read this e-mail me.

Alex,

I totally agree with you. After I watched the movie, I was like Wow! the film has many points that was trying to present to its audience. I will be writing a review about this real soon.

About sending Mel Gibson an email. I'm sorry, I wish I know where to send it.

I just finished watching Apocalypto, my boys had it under their bed, they swore they did not watch it...:) I loved it, especially since I had just returned from my first trip to the Yucatan in April. The old Spanish catholic colonial architecture down there is amazing.

The ending of Apocalypto, where Jaguar Paw witnesses the arrival of Cortez (I am pretty sure it was Cortez anyway!) and the Franciscan missionaries enthralled me, as I have been beginning to study about the conversion of Mexico to Christianity.

As a recent re-convert to the Catholic faith, I hope Mel continues to document the spiritual history of Mexico by making a sequal to this film. He could get into the whole Our Lady of Guadalupe vision incident and show how quickly this beautiful country adopted Christianity. This would fit nicely with his Traditionalist Catholic leanings....Other interesting events that would make great drama was the persecution of the Church by the Mexican government as late as the 1920's. There are a whole bunch of Mexican martyrs that if not already canonized, probably been beatified.

Does anyone know how to send Mel an email?

The movie "Apocalypto" is expertly directed and visually stunning, but the level of violence is hard to take. Mel has explained that the violence is upsetting because we care so much about the characters, but I disagree. As a woman, I found it difficult to bond with the characters after the opening series of very male-oriented jokes and vinyettes, but I was still shocked by the relentless horror of events that comprised most of the movie. Mel is brilliant, but I hope he will find stories to direct that are more uplifting and inspiring. The world needs gifted story-tellers like Mel to offer us healing dreams, not nightmares.

Finally, the ending of the movie was disappointing for me. I wanted and expected the protaganist to rise up and make a difference for his people rather than merely disappear again into the forest/jungle and his previous way of life (okay, visions from the unforgetable movie "Braveheart" certainly influenced my expectations). What changed as a result of the protaganist's heroic experiences? His immediate family was saved (certainly a good thing), but nothing else changed as far as I could see, so what is the point of enduring such a gruesome plot line?

On the other hand, if I view it as a "psychodrama" depicting some of Mel's inner experiences on screen, then I hope he truly has escaped those inner demons and now has a much better life ahead. God bless him!
